Bruni wins prestigious honor
By JULIE DAFFERN
THURSDAY, MAY 5, 2005

The Webb County Bar Association announced County Judge Louis Bruni as the recipient of the 2005 Liberty Bell Award on Wednesday.

Recipients of the award are nonattorneys who contribute to the community through volunteerism or civil service.

“I think that the reason he was chosen was the community service that he has done and his strong advocacy for the people that he represents,” said Oscar Vela Jr., president of the association.

“For example, he is currently working with the colonias and trying to get water to them,” he said.

Bruni said he was elated to be this year’s recipient.

“It’s an honor that the bar bestowed on me this tremendous award, especially since I’ve always been a supporter of law enforcement,” Bruni said. “To receive an award of this magnitude will always be close to my heart.”

Bruni took office in 2003, after serving two terms as a city council member.

Since 2003, Bruni has overseen the establishment of the Webb County Jail District, the introduction of the largest federal prison facility, and has pushed for the construction of a fifth international bridge.

As a city council member, Bruni helped secure almost $2 million for storm-water improvements in the Heights area, and saw to the establishment of the city’s new library and police station; both located in his district.

Bruni has also received the Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Rotary Foundation and an honorary doctorate of music by the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra, 25th anniversary committee.

Past recipients of the award include Justice of the Peace Danny Valdez; director of Casa De Misericordia, Rosemary Welsh; and founding member of the Laredo Kidney Foundation, Celita Borchers.

As a part of the national Law Day, Bruni will receive the award at a luncheon at the Laredo Country Club on May 12.
