Commissioners to tap discussion on aquifer
BY TRICIA CORTEZ Times staff writer Monday, January 26, 2004
Continuing his quest for additional water sources, Webb County Judge Louis H. Bruni has now turned his attention to the Carrizo Wilcox Aquifer in north Webb County. At the Monday commissioners court meeting, Bruni has requested a status report on the county’s water test well No. 1, located off Highway 44 near Encinal.
“Drilling this well was funded in this year’s fiscal budget. I want to know when that well is going to be drilled,” Bruni said Sunday.
During his two terms on the Laredo City Council, Bruni aggressively pursued the multimillion-dollar secondary water source project over the same aquifer, which the city is still overseeing.
Another item he has sponsored for the Monday meeting is an update from the county’s legislative consultant in Austin, Andrea McWilliams of McWilliams and Associates.
“She is going to give us an update on activities in this past legislative session,” Bruni said. The county will also consider creating a County Emergency Management Program.
Commissioners will also vote to approve final plans and specifications for the Rio Bravo Community Park from Architectura S.A. and to authorize the purchasing agent to solicit construction bids.
They will consider several large contracts, such as:
-
a $1.49 million construction contract with Jimmy Closner Construction Co. Inc. for water distribution system improvements within the city of El Cenizo;
-
a $1.24 million construction contract with Ramos Industries Inc. for improvements to the wastewater collection system within the city of El Cenizo;
-
a $1.03 million construction contract with Jimmy Closner Construction for replacements of water lines within the city of Rio Bravo;
-
a $897,692 construction contract with FMG Contracting Co. for the construction of a new Justice of the Peace Courthouse in South Laredo;
-
approving Work Authorization No. 1 to Mejia Engineering for a $64,100 contract for the platting of 23 residential lots in the colonia named Los Corralitos;
-
approving final pay request and retainage to Jimmy Closner & Sons Construction Co. in the amount of $34,796 for the Los Corralitos Water Improvement project.
Commissioners will also vote to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Children’s Advocacy Center of Laredo-Webb County to administer a two-year Safe Havens grant worth $350,000.
They will also meet in closed session to discuss five items. One is the lawsuit filed by former Risk Manager Janie Puente, who was terminated last year.
Another is to discuss a request of the community organization, the Quad City Community Action Program, to use the Quad City Community Center to host a “Get to Know Your Candidate Night” on Jan. 27.
