Council to hear about water

BY MARLENE JASSO
Times staff writer

The future of Laredo's secondary water source lies in the hands of city council members during their meeting on Monday. The council members want to convert the Utilities Department into a private company rather than a city department. During the meeting, Azurix, Inc., a nation-wide company, will present its specialization on the secondary source of water to the city council.

"We need a company who is at least nation-wide and who have the knowledge and experience of secondary source of water and privatization of the Utilities Department," council member, Louis Bruni said. Another topic, which was requested by Bruni, was the action to approve the purchasing and building of a new Webb County Appraisal District Building. Bruni is currently the vice-chair to represent the Appraisal District. "We were wasting money renting the building," Bruni said.

The city council purchased a $1.2 million property, which was the lowest bid. "The board took action and selected that to purchase and to build on that site," Bruni said. "During the meeting we need the council's resolution and action to release the funds in order to start building."

Also included in the agenda for the council's meeting is the submission by the city manager of the fiscal year 1999 to 2000 annual budget. Each council member will be provided with a copy of the budget. The council meeting will be held on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at City Council Chambers.
